BATON ROUGE, La. -- Governor Bobby Jindal issued a statement Monday evening addressing the breach of a protective levee in Harvey and laying out the state's response. The full text of the statement follows. “I spoke to Jefferson Parish President John Young and directed state agencies to work with the federal government and act quickly in order to protect around 20 businesses from the levee breech on the inside of the flood protection system in Harvey. In order to protect businesses along the Harvey Canal, we are working with Jefferson Parish, the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-West and the Corps of Engineers. Earlier today, the Department of Environment Quality moved quickly to support the Corps’ action to open valves along the Harvey Floodwall structure and allow floodwaters to flow into drainage structures and away from businesses there.“Currently, an estimated 10 to 20 gallons of diesel sheen is present on the floodwater inside the Harvey Floodwall system. DEQ identified a responsible party that contracted with an oil spill clean up company, which is capturing the diesel with boom. The floodwaters are contained inside the Harvey Floodwall structure and the floodwaters have already begun to subside. When the floodwaters are significantly reduced, the state will work with the businesses there, the Corps and the Levee District to repair and fortify the breached interior levee.“We continue to be in close contact with the Levee District, the Corps and Parish officials, and I have directed all state agencies to assist in this response effort however possible. Currently, State Police is escorting Parish President John Young on a flight over the affected area in the Harvey Floodwall and other parts of the parish in order to assess other areas that may have been impacted by flooding from Tropical Storm Lee.”
