(NewsCore) - Jon Huntsman will move his campaign headquarters from Florida to New Hampshire, where he hopes to score an upset victory by winning over moderates and independents, the campaign announced Thursday.
According to a report from The Hill newspaper, the move from his Orlando, Fla., base comes as Huntsman gains ground in the Granite State and the relocation will allow the struggling campaign to build on its momentum there, with the hope of propelling the former Utah governor ahead.
Huntsman has struggled to gain traction in many national polls, often registering support in the low single-digits among likely Republican voters.
Along with its new Manchester, N.H., headquarters, the campaign will keep offices in Florida, and South Carolina, where he has focused much of his campaign strategy.
Campaign workers in Orlando were told about the move by senior aides Thursday afternoon, the New York Times reported.
The move will include staff layoffs, aides told The Times
"As evidenced by recent polling, Jon Huntsman's support with New Hampshire voters continues to grow every day and this move will ensure that we have the resources necessary to win the First in the Nation primary," campaign manager Matt David told The Hill.
For his part, Huntsman appeared optimistic about his momentum in the Granite State.
"Good news from New Hampsh; moving up in the polls!" he tweeted on Sept. 22, following a recent Suffolk Univsersity poll showing him with 10 percent support there.
