Top 5 Reasons Why Expats Move Back Home

There is a big world out there beyond our borders, and many people choose to experience it in ways that go beyond the typical two-week vacation to a five-star hotel in Europe, or the backpacking trip through southeast Asia. Some people choose to move and place their American roots in foreign soil, for a number of different reasons. Maybe they need a change of scenery, or maybe they are moving for their career or education.
But no matter their reason for moving, it’s an inevitability that eventually, most expats will return home. There are several different reasons why expats may return home to settle back into life in the good old US of A, leaving their foreign exploits behind.
  1. There’s nothing quite like being reunited with family. One of the main reasons why expats decide to return home is to be closer to their family. While being overseas can have many benefits, distance is not one of them. Distance can have adverse effects on relationships, especially relationships with your parents or your children. At the end of the day, many expats decide to move back home to be closer to the ones they love.
  2. Health reasons. Being sick and overseas in an unfamiliar place can sometimes be scary and intimidating, and many people, when confronted with an illness, are driven to return home to a place where they know what kind of care they will get. Also, people with health issues are also likely to want to be around family during times of illness, which also ties back into the first reason why expats return home.
  3. The job beckons. One of the most common reasons for people to move out of the country is due to a career-related relocation, and sometimes that same career will take a person to many different places around the world over the course of their life. Often, expats who were relocated overseas for a position find themselves returning back home after several years with the offer of another position or a promotion. Being offered a job back home is an extremely tempting reason for expats to leave their overseas home and return to the nest.
  4. Putting your family’s needs first. Relocating to another country might be all croissants and early morning walks by the canal during the beginning, but eventually it might wear on your other immediate family members. You might be adjusting to life an expat well, but maybe it isn’t so easy for your husband or wife or for your children, to be so far away from their home and from their extended family. There can also be other factors involved, like your spouse taking a different career path and needing to move back home, or your children going back home to attend college.
  5. Being homesick is no fun. Whether or not you became an expat for the change of scenery or to follow your career, the truth of the matter is, your homeland will always be your homeland, no matter what, and some people just grow homesick. It’s never easy to move away from home and adjust to a new life in a strange country, so for some people, there’s nothing more relieving than finally moving back home and knowing that you’ve had an experience that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
