Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla moved his career-best hitting streak to 27 games with an infield single in the third inning of Saturday's 11-7 loss against the New York Mets.
With men on first and second and nobody out, Uggla hit a bouncer right on the chalk line toward third base. David Wright charged the ball and picked it up, but had no play. Uggla has the longest active hit streak in the majors and the fourth-longest in Braves history. He is four games behind Rico Carty's team-record of 31 set during the 1970 season. Ahead of Uggla are Marquis Grissom (28, 1996) and Rowland Office (29, 1976).
The hit by Uggla was part of a five-run third inning. He also homered in the ninth.
He signed a five-year contract extension with the Braves after being acquired from the Marlins in a trade, but has struggled this season. Uggla's hitting just .220.
The wild card-leading Braves also own the second-longest hitting streak in the majors in Freddie Freeman. The rookie first baseman moved his to 20 games with a broken-bat RBI line single to center field in the third inning.
Freeman has the second-longest rookie hit streak in Braves history. Alvin Dark hit in 23 straight for the Boston Braves in 1948.
