MANILA, Philippines – One of the most-cited sayings is “nobody is perfect”; everyone commits mistakes.
If you happen to have done something bad in your job, don’t get insane yet. You may have put yourself in humiliation, but there is still a way for you to correct your mistakes.
Failing at work is always a nightmare, most especially if it is going to have an impact on the company. But moving on from a big blunder at work is not impossible. Here are tips that will help you run damage control.
Apologize and take responsibility for your action
The first thing that you must do is to apologize and be responsible for your mistake. Say what really happened, and don’t give a series of excuses. Do not blame other people for your mistakes. You have to be sincere in this, so you won’t have to feel guilty and keep on apologizing.
Keep your cool
Sometimes, you get so unlucky to be in an unhealthy working environment, where people will tease and pick on you whenever you do something wrong. A gentle ribbing is acceptable; you can live with it. But if the teasing becomes hurtful and you feel you are not respected anymore, it would be good to talk to your superior or an HR officer.
Let yourself breathe
Dwelling on your mistakes will only make you feel bad about your performance, your job, and yourself. This will not help you, and the company might not like you for it. Instead, look at your accomplishments and let your failure drive you to accomplish more at work.
Analyze and learn
Evaluation of the things that happened will help you know what to improve in your performance. By analyzing, you will be able to make a better plan for your next projects. It is also good to seek advice from your superior. Surely, your boss has a better understanding on the things in the office, and s/he can mentor you further. If you have some ideas that you think can solve the current problem, might as well share it with your boss and have him or her say what s/he thinks about it.
Confide to someone you trust
If your failure really bothers you so much, it would be better if you will talk to a friend and express your feelings to him or her. This will lighten up the burden that you are carrying and it will in turn let you have a clearer mind.
Undergo training if possible
Maybe, your failure is due to lack of a certain skill. If that is the case, work at it. Ask your superior or someone else to train you on that particular skill.
Move on
Again, dwelling on your mistake will not help you. Your colleagues also want to move on from the issue, so help each other by doing your best at work. You have apologized and taken responsibility for your actions, so let go.
