Local Moves

There are some key differences between local moves and long distance moves. Examples:
  • You will generally be charged per man-hour rather than by volume/weight and distance.
  • You will likely chose how many workers you'd like
  • The time may start when the truck leaves the company (as opposed to when it arrives at your house)
  • Estimates will still be based on the amount of property you have, though they will be heavily impacted by elevators, flights of stairs, etc (as this slows movers down)
  • Often, padding and wardrobe boxes are included for free (however, other materials are not)
Given these differences, here is our advice for shopping for local movers:
  • Check the BBB website to investigate the record
  • Ask if the movers are employees of the business (as opposed to temporary or hourly workers
  • Shop around for estimates and be suspicious of any local mover who gives a much lower time estimate than the others
  • Make sure you tell companies (in advance) if the movers will have to contend with flights of stairs, elevators, etc--this will impact the required time!
  • Be sure to box us your belongings in advance--because you are paying by the hour, you do not want to get caught paying for them to do something you could have done! (also, local movers will charge extra for boxes)
