Relocation Assistance

I have placed relocation assistance in a category of its own within organizing. Whether you are relocating locally, across the nation, or internationally you will be doing some fairly hefty organizing to accomplish a smooth transition.
There are such a broad number of tasks to perform and such a big transition can be filled with emotions or even traumatic for family members. If the move is far you’ll be distancing friends and possibly other family members or other close relatives. To be quite honest that may even be a relief when it comes to some relatives. So, it isn’t all necessarily loaded with despair.
Consequently I’ll address different aspects of relocating in articles under this heading. Some of those topics will cover but not necessarily be limited to the following:

  • The who and what of move notifications involving: address change, utility connection and disconnection, bank transfers, and much more
  • Selecting and working with movers: estimates, damage issues, insurance coverage
  • What you can not ship legally: non-allowables like flammable items and explosives
  • Personal possessions and valuable items you should transport yourself: prescription medications, cash, important documents
  • Packing tips
  • Transporting pets
  • Pre-move thoughts: about using up perishables, planning garage sales, thinking of and return of borrowed items(to you & to others), hidden stash(those old coins under the plank in the belfry)
  • Getting the car serviced: if it will be an extensive road trip
  • Travel arrangements
  • Records to transfer or change: student records, medical records, insurance policies, etc.
  • Items to leave unpacked that you will need before you reach your destination and immediately at your destination: moving documents, new address, contact information(movers, family members, friends, utility companies, etc.), cleaning items, food for the trip, small tools, flashlight, and other necessities like first aid and medications
  • What to do at your destination: renew auto registration and drivers license, checking on local laws(within the community or if applicable the state or nation), painting and cleaning the house in advance, connecting utilities, internet connection
  • Special advice for relocating seniors: like types of facilities, services offered, and so on
  • Other relocation topics
