NORWICH, Conn. -- After decades of being stonewalled by man-made dams, the American shad is now moving to spawning grounds.
Since May, the Norwich Public Utilities, has trucked about 1,000 American shad up stream from their dam in Greenville with the help of a portable tank."We're seeing hundreds if not thousands of shad each season to our Greenville dam. They get stuck. So, we're getting them unstuck and helping them to their old spawning grounds," said Mark Greene, with the Norwich Public Utilities.Working with federal and state regulators, Norwich Public Utilities is trying to restore the native fish to their natural habitat. In late spring the shad's instinct drives it from the Atlantic Ocean, up the Thames River and then up the Shetucket River at the Greenville Dam.A lift system helps collect the fish which includes other species, into a holding pen. Then they are transferred into a portable tank and driven several miles up river where they are released."We're hoping that in the future we could find some more shad elsewhere and bring them into the Shetucket River," said John Paul Mereen.
