The Detroit Tigers have moved Phil Coke to the bullpen.
Coke, in his first year as a full-time starter, is just 1-8 with a 4.91 earned run average this season. The lefty has struggled in his last two starts, allowing 14 runs -- 12 earned -- in just 8 2/3 innings.
"It was not a tough decision," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland on Thursday. "It was a disappointing decision, because we had hoped he would work out better [as a starter], because we thought it was certainly worth it. I think the stuff's there. Sometimes you weigh your options with who else you have."
Leyland said Charlie Furbush would take Coke's turn in the rotation on Monday against the Angels. The rookie left-hander is 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 12 appearances out of the bullpen for the Tigers.
Before joining the big league club, Furbush was 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Toledo.
Coke, meanwhile, was primarily a reliever in his first three big league seasons. He made 73 appearances out of the bullpen last year in his first season with Detroit, while making one spot start, and posted an overall record of 7-5 with a 3.76 ERA.
