WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP)—
A Triad organization said there is some optimism that the drop in American manufacturing jobs is slowly starting to reverse.Barrett Walker with the Industrial Extension Service said some manufacturers are either considering or already starting to bring overseas jobs back to the United States.
Walker said that's partly because companies have gotten their costs down and are concerned about long delivery times.
"Their customers can't wait 6-10 weeks for something to come from China. They need smaller lots, and they need them immediately," Walker said.
That would be good news for unemployment offices across the Triad, as jobs in the region known for manufacturing are difficult to come by.
The jobs coming back require more computer and Internet skills, Walker said. As a result, more community colleges are focusing on computer training to get a potential workforce ready, Walker said.
"Most of the people that have been in manufacturing in the past would like to do manufacturing again. But I think they do see the light. They do have to be high tech, and they have to go back and get education and training in a different career field," Walker said.
Industrial Extension Service helps Triad manufacturers become more efficient and encourages them to stay here and even grow.
