Florida Penalized For Moving Up Primary - Click On Detroit News

It is official: Florida will lose half its delegates to next summer's GOP convention for moving up its presidential primary.
The candidate favored by a majority of Florida delegates will get all 50 of the votes cast.The decision by the Republican National Convention came as no surprise. Florida Republicans knew they would be penalized after they moved up the state's primary to late January instead of holding off until early March. As a result, the RNC said Florida must pay a price for disobeying party rules.At the GOP convention in Tampa in August, just half of Florida's delegates will be seated and able to vote.Brian Hughes, a spokesman for the Republican Party of Florida, said, "Florida's delegate count at 55 will be almost as large as the first three states before us combined. We are looking at Florida setting the momentum for the election, which is where we want to be."South Carolina and New Hampshire were also penalized for moving up their primaries.Florida GOP leaders said it is a small price to pay for the clout Florida will get by going early in the presidential primaries.
