If you plan to attend a Waukee school board meeting in the future, circle “Monday” on your calendar.
Waukee school board members decided unanimously tonight to move their regularly scheduled meetings from the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month to the second and fourth Mondays of the month.
This change will begin in October. The Waukee school board will meet at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 and Oct. 24.
Several members of the board said they would like to attend Waukee school activities that typically occur on Tuesdays, including basketball and volleyball games.
“There were a lot of school activities on Tuesday nights that school board members were missing, and so that was one of the conversation-drivers,” said Dave Duncan, a member of the board.
Waukee Superintendent Dave Wilkerson said numerous Iowa school boards meet on Mondays, although the Waukee school board has not met on Mondays in the 18 years Wilkerson has been in the district.
“There are probably more school boards that meet on Monday nights than Tuesday nights,” Wilkerson said.
The school board usually meets at the district’s administration office at 560 S.E. University Ave. in Waukee.
Jerry Ripperger, who was reelected as board president on Tuesday, said he would like the board to meet at some of the district’s new facilities occasionally.
“I would over the course of the next year like for us as a board to move some of these meetings around our various facilities and to really publish this and to get some of the public in to see some of the facilities,” Ripperger said. “I think it would be great to have one at the performing arts center, or one at South Middle School, so people can see the facilities that exist here in the district.”
