Top seeds Daniela Hantuchova and Lucie Safarova were a pair of opening-round winners Tuesday at the $220,000 Bell Challenge.
The Slovakian Hantuchova held off Croat Ajla Tomljanovic 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, while the Czech Safarova dismantled 37-year-old American Jill Craybas 6-2, 6-1 in a mere 51 minutes on the hardcourts at PEPS Laval University. Up next for the top-seeded Hantuchova will be Hungarian Melinda Czink.
A pair of seeds exited the draw on Day 2, as Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova leveled No. 6 Chinese Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-2 and French qualifier Julie Coin overcame No. 8 Georgian Anna Tatishvili 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The 2011 Bell Challenge titlist will earn $37,000.
