TCU might not be heading to the Big East next year after all.
The Big 12 Conference announced Thursday its decision to invite TCU to become its next member. TCU acknowledged Thursday that talks with the Big 12 have taken place.
"These discussions with the Big 12 have huge implications for TCU," said TCU Chancellor Victor Boschini Jr. in a statement. "It will allow us to return to old rivalries, something our fans and others have been advocating for many years. As always, we must consider what's best for TCU and our student- athletes in this ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics. We look forward to continuing these discussions with the Big 12."
TCU had agreed to leave the Mountain West Conference for the Big East starting July 1, 2012. However, the Big East is changing with eventual departures of Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC, and the Big 12 is trying to fill vacancies created by the recent defections of Nebraska, Colorado and Texas A&M.
Nebraska left for the Big Ten and Colorado accepted an invitation from the then-Pac-10 last summer, leaving the Big 12 with just 10 teams for this academic year. After Texas A&M decided last month to leave for the SEC, the Big 12 appeared ready to be picked apart again when the now-Pac-12 considered further expansion with discussions of Texas, Oklahoma and others.
However, the Pac-12 decided to hold at 12 teams and the Big 12 immediately began its own expeditious expansion plans.
TCU would be a natural fit, regionally, giving the league another team in Texas to replace A&M. It would also provide the conference with another strong football program, as the Horned Frogs finished 13-0 in 2010 and were 12-1 in 2009.
The Big 12 is also trying to keep another member from leaving, as Missouri announced its decision to begin exploring other conference options. Rumors have swirled recently that Missouri will join Texas A&M in the SEC, and the Big 12 said in its release Thursday that Missouri did not participate in the vote to recommend TCU for membership.
Since TCU had agreed to join the Big East, leaving the conference will cost a $5 million exit fee. However, it won't have to wait more than two years to depart.
The Big East has said it will hold Syracuse and Pittsburgh to its 27-month departure notification.
This past weekend, the Big East presidents gave commissioner John Marinatto the go-ahead to begin expansion plans. If TCU never makes it to the league, the conference would eventually be left with just six football-playing members, leaving its status as an automatic qualifier for the BCS bowl package in serious jeopardy.
