Cubs Stop Greenies, Move One Win Away From 19th Title

Game Thursday
(The Arena, San Juan City)
2 p.m.- San Beda vs La Salle-Greenhills (jrs)
MANILA, Philippines –San Beda leaned on Daryl Nazareno's free throw and Antonio Bonsubre's steal in the dying seconds to eke out a come-from-behind 74-73 victory yesterday to move on the cusp of greatness in the 87th NCAA high school basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Francis Abarcar and sophomore Arvin Tolentino led everyone with 21 and 19 points, respectively but it was Nazareno and Bonsubre who came through in the clutch as the Cubs gained a 2-1 (win-loss) edge in their best-of-five title showdown since it was given an outright 1-0 edge for sweeping the elimination round in 18 games.
A win by the Cubs on Thursday would forge them a date with history since they will clinch a 19th title and leave the Mapua Red Robins, who have 18 crowns, behind as the most titled high school in the oldest collegiate league in the land.
"That's really our goal, to give the school its 19th title and we're one more game of accomplishing it," said San Beda coach Britt Reroma.
After Nazareno made the first free throw attempt and missed the second with 8.1 seconds to go, the Greenies, who pulled off an 85-82 upset last week to knot the series and spoiled a perfect season for the Cubs, had a chance to snatch the win but Thomas Torres threw a pass to Jon Villaruz that was intercepted by Bonsubre and threw the ball in the air as time expired.
The Cubs then celebrated frantically on the court knowing they're on the verge of underscoring their reputation as a school considered as having one of the best high school basketball programs in the country today.
"We will definitely go for the clincher in the game, we don't want to stretch it to another game," said Reroma.
La Salle-Greenhills, which was led by Villaruz's 20 points, can actually extend the series if it could win the next game and force a deciding game set on Nov. 7.
The Cubs are also playing with six players that were just came out from the hospital after having bouts with amoebiasis.
"I don't want it to make it as an excuse but we have six players who just came out from the hospital, that's the reason we struggled in this particular game," said Reroma.
Truly, San Beda played far from its cohesive self as it just dished out its tournament low six assists while missing 13 of the 35 shots it attempted from the foul line.
Thankfully, the Cubs had enough strength to control the boards with 54, 12 from Energen Pilipinas standout Arvin Tolentino and 10 from Bonsubre, as against the Greenies' 40 as their best big man, another Energen Pilipinas hotshot Gelo Vito, was saddled in foul trouble the whole game.
San Beda also found a way to contain Andre Paras, son of the PBA's only Rookie MVP Benjie who was held to just eight points and just one in the final period after exploding for 11 of his 13 points in the fourth canto the last time out.
"We know he (Paras) killed us in the first game that's why I told my big men to watch out for him and I'm happy they did," said Reroma.
The scores:
San Beda 74- Abarcar 21, Tolentino 19, Nazareno 16, Abatayo 8, Tongco 6, Bonsubre 4, Patenio 0, Munsayac 0, Miranda 0, Macapayag 0, dela Costa 0, Babilonia 0
La Salle-Greenhills 73- Villaruz 20, Bonleon 13, Torres 10, Barrera 8, Paras 8, Ramilo 4, Marcial 4, Yap 4, Vito 2, Sta. Clara 0, Laigo 0
Quarterscores: 18-19; 33-38; 61-58; 74-73
