Harwinton, Burlington Moving Shelters Due to Demand - Register Citizen News

HARWINTON/BURLINGTON - Harwinton and Burlington are moving their shelters due to increasing demand.

Burlington First Selectman Cathy Bergstrom said the main shelter is being moved from the town hall to Lewis Mills High School.

More than 25 people stayed overnight at the town hall Monday, which Bergstrom said is about the limit of that shelter. The high school can hold about 60 residents, and has 10 men's and 10 women's showers available. Residents are encouraged to bring their own food, but there will be some Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) available for distribution to those who need them.

Harwinton First Selectman Frank Chiaramonte said that town's shelter is being moved from the senior center to Harwinton Consolidated School. The senior center also saw about 25 residents staying over Monday night, and the school can hold several dozen residents.

Chiaramonte said he does not believe the school has showers, but residents can use the showers at Lewis Mills.

Region 10 schools have been canceled for the rest of the week due to the schools serving as shelters.
