How to Pack, Move like a Pro!

If you're relocating and can't stand the thought of you and your friends having to put all your possessions into a rental moving truck one more time, you might be ready to investigate professional moving companies in your area to see what they offer. If you're worried about the cost, you needn't be. You'll probably discover there are more cheap moving companies in your area than you think.

To find a mover, you'll want to get referrals from friends and colleagues and also do online moving research to compile a list of movers that might be good candidates. If you think there will be delay between when your belongings are picked up by the moving company and when you'll ultimately be able to move them into your new home, make sure to include companies that feature both moving and storage on your list. That will save you from having to investigate two separate types of companies. And as you interview each company to get their qualifications and pricing, it wouldn't hurt to ask whether they offer moving boxes and other packing materials. Some moving companies even offer free packing materials when you use their services. Or, if you don't want to do the packing yourself, you can inquire how much it would cost for experienced moving company employees to do it for you.
  • You'll save money if you disassemble large items like wall units, entertainment centers, swing sets and storage sheds in the days before the move. Leaving those tasks for the movers will not only cost you more but will also delay loading on moving day.
  • Make sure to check all boxes that have been stored in the garage, basement, shed or attic to see if they need repacking. If any of them are torn or can't be sealed because they're overstuffed, repack them in new cartons.
  • Mark each box clearly with the room you want it to end up in at your destination. Group all similar boxes together, and ask that the movers load and unload them together. This will allow you to begin unpacking one room as soon as all the related boxes are off the truck.
  • With the exception of last-minute items you'll need in the morning, everything should be packed and ready the night before the moving trucks arrive.
  • Don't pack flammable or corrosive materials, such as aerosol cans, lighter fluid or bleach, because these can either explode or leak. It's best to recycle these or dispose of them according to package directions and just replace them after the move.
Above all, remember that some moving companies have specific standards for packing and may refuse to load improperly packed boxes. So your best bet is to start with new moving boxes or at least used boxes that are in good shape, and use strong packing tape so you won't have any problems when it comes time to load the truck.
