A Dallas County recycling site in Waukee that generated complaints from neighbors and rural recyclers was moved to a new location.
The former site, located at 205 Ashworth Road, is owned and managed by Dallas County. The site was intended for use by the county’s rural residents, although neighbors said everyone recycled at the site.
On Oct. 7, the site’s containers were moved to 1205 Sixth St. in Waukee, the location of the city’s former public works building. A third recycling container was added at that site.
Dallas County received numerous complaints about the old site when Waste Management took over the recycling site’s pick-up on July 1.
Many of the complaints referenced the new Waste Management bins, which residents said were too small and sometimes overflowed, causing debris to blow into their backyards.
The bins at the new site haven’t been full yet, said Ted Trewin, environmental health director for Dallas County. Pick-up days are still on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Trewin said he has been keeping an eye on the old site.
“I have been going by everyday to see if people are dumping there. I haven’t had people dump there yet,” Trewin said.
The Dallas County Board of Supervisors approved the move of the recycling site at their Oct. 4 meeting.
Anna Marie Pulliam’s backyard is less than 200 feet from the former recycling site. Pulliam said she was thrilled when she learned the site would be moved.
“I don’t have to worry about doing trash patrol every night in my backyard after work when the wind blows,” Pulliam said.
There are a total of seven recycling sites managed by Dallas County. Trewin said residents should be sure the materials they are dropping off are indeed recyclable. They should also break down cardboard, so it takes up less space, Trewin advised.
