Whether you're moving from a large apartment into your first small home, or an empty nester trading in a large family home for a condo, you'll have to say goodbye to some of your stuff. Moving into a smaller place is a challenge and if you want your new home to look as good as your last home you'll need to plan accordingly.
The Downsizer's Moving Checklist
Make a List
Be honest with yourself about what you can and can't live without. If you have some items you really love, take them with you – you'll find a spot for them. But if there are items you aren't as attached to, get rid of them.
Start Early
Once you decide you're going to downsize start going through your things and purging some items. Get rid of old clothes, worn books, and those little bits that build up in the furnace room or garage. The other really important thing to go through is old papers. If you hang onto old bills and receipts start wading through them. They're a pain to move and there's probably a lot you can get rid of.
Compare the Space
Use an online room planner to draw up some floor plans and compare the size of your old home to the size of your new home. Play around with furniture arrangements and assess what will fit.
Edit
Go through the items you plan to take with you and edit them down again. Get rid of things like extra kitchen accessories you don't need, or small broken appliances you're never going to get fixed. This is not the time to be sentimental.
Divide and Conquer
Divide the items you don't want to keep into those that are garbage, those you can sell and those that can go to charity. It's easy to just throw things away but chances are there are a lot of things that can be used by other people. It's worth the extra time and effort to keep things out of the landfill and help those in need.
Sell What You Can
With online auctions and sites like Craigslist it's easier than ever to sell items and get a little of your money back. This is why it's a good idea to start early – you've got more of a chance of selling your stuff.
Enlist the Help of Friends
Don't underestimate the power of a second opinion. Sometimes when you're trying to decide whether or not to keep something you just need a trusted friend to tell you it's garbage and toss it.
