SOUDERTON INDEPENDENT OFFICES TO MOVE TO MAIN STREET - MONTGOMERY NEWS

There’s been a lot of change at the Souderton Independent these days, and based on some of the phone calls we’ve received, some of it we’ve been better at keeping you up-to-date on than others.

As many of you (now) know, when the new year arrived, we changed our publication date to Friday. This was done in part to better serve our advertisers, and eventually our readers as well. You may have your own questions or feelings about the change, and if you haven’t already, send those my way — emorris@montgomerynews.com or call 215-723-4801 — and I’ll be happy to discuss.

But rest assured, your beloved — we hope — Independent will still come to you each week and will still contain all the local news we can cram into it. And if you like your news every day, our website is updated regularly and has extras such as photos and video — and we’re constantly working to improve it to get you content faster and make it more interactive, all with the goal of providing the best coverage of the Souderton Area School District and the municipalities within it as we can.

And this week, the news is coming from our own offices. We’re moving!

For about two decades, we’ve been located in our current offices on Broad Street, “right by the Dunkin’ Donuts,” as we always tell people on the phone trying to find us.

We moved to this office when the paper was purchased by Montgomery Newspapers, the chain of weeklies to which we still belong, and so the press operations were condensed to the Fort Washington home of Montgomery. Technological advances continued, and now the Independent, along with the rest of the Montgomery Newspapers, and our sister dailies like the Reporter in Lansdale and the Times-Herald in Norristown, are printed at a massive and pretty impressive plant in Exton.

Prior to that, the paper was located on Front Street in Souderton for most of the history of its existence that we can dig up. And trust us, we can dig up a lot — including a reprint of a 1917 edition with a photo of that office, along with the exciting front page news of all the new press equipment that was purchased at the time.

That same shift in technology means that we no longer need to be sitting at our desks to be tapping out the stories we just gathered out in the community, and so we can condense our office space to better reflect the needs of our current staff.

So it’s with a great deal of excitement that we let you know that we’re moving to the Village Centre Office Suites at 121 N. Main St. We’ll be in Suite 307 to be exact, with a nice view of Montgomery Theater across the way. And if you need directions, we’ll probably tell you we’re also “right by the sculpture.”

We’re excited to be at the heart of and within walking distance of all the things included in the revitalization of Souderton.

Any time we can put more feet on the street, we’re better connected with what’s going on all around us all the time.

Speaking of feet on the street, our reporters are getting netbooks as part of the move, so that they can gather info, work on and file stories from wherever they are, be it a borough council meeting, a sporting event or on the sidelines of the Indian Valley Soap Box Derby. Have we mentioned how excited we are to have a front row seat to events like the soap box derby, holiday parade and, of course, the Univest Grand Prix?
