School’s Main Office Moving - Fairmont Sentinel News

FAIRMONT - Fairmont Area Schools is moving - or at least its main office is.
School board members approved relocating the office from its current location at Southern Minnesota Educational Campus (at the corner of Park Street and Blue Earth Avenue) to offices at Fairmont Elementary School. The move will come before Dec. 31.
Superintendent Joe Brown said the move is a cost-saving measure, as the district rents the office space at SMEC?for $6 per square foot from the city of Fairmont. The savings involved totals $10,800 annually.
The move has been in the works since the elementary school remodeling project was in the planning stages.
"When we remodeled the Fairmont Elementary School, we developed a records room that is located on the south side of the building between the elementary art room and the elementary music room," Brown said. "We have installed metal shelving that [will make] it easier and safer to retrieve the hundreds of boxes of records that we are mandated to maintain by the state of Minnesota."
Records are currently stored in the basement of the SMEC building.
"The main advantage is to relocate the district office into one of our two education campuses" Brown said. "This will allow us to have administrative backup in the elementary school, where we only have two principals for 910 students."
In other school district business, closed bids for the Lincoln school building are due to the school district Nov. 15.
If no bids come in, Brown expects the district to close up the building.
"If someone does not buy that building, I am going to recommend we close it at the end of June anyway and mothball it," Brown said. "We are subsidizing the four programs that are in there."
