MIAMI, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Hilary, a powerful Category 4 hurricane, kept its distance from the Mexican coast Saturday night as it chugged across the Pacific Ocean, U.S. forecasters said.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 8 p.m. PDT advisory that Hilary was still producing 135 mph winds but at about 425 miles south-southeast of the southern tip of Baja California was too far out to sea to be a pressing danger to Mexico. The storm was moving west at 9 mph.
There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect and no significant changes are expected over the next two days. But swells were likely causing life-threatening surf and rip currents in southwestern Mexico, the hurricane center said.
Hurricane-force winds extended 35 miles from the center, tropical storm-force winds, up to 85 mph.
Hilary's movement was expected to slow Sunday and Monday.
