Pack Beforehand

Eliminate Unwanted Items

• Get rid of extra belongings to reduce the amount of material to pack and transport. 4 to 6 weeks before moving, sort through your possessions to see what can be discarded. If you haven’t used the item in two years, you probably don’t need it. Give unwanted items away to friends or extended family. Host a garage sale to sell unwanted items and earn some quick cash. Donate unwanted items to charity. You might be able to claim the value of the donation on your taxes.

Update Mailing Addresses

• To ensure your mail reaches your new home, contact your local post office and give them a forwarding address. Post offices usually forward mail for a specific time period, allowing you sufficient time to update your mailing address. Contact credit card companies, magazine or newspaper subscription services and any other correspondence services to update your mailing address.

Recruit Help

• If you possess a large quantity of items that need to be moved, consider hiring a moving company. Professional moving companies have access to their own moving vans and trucks that can accommodate a large quantity of goods in each trip. Because moving companies usually charge by the hour, using a large truck allows movers to transport items as quickly as possible, potentially cutting costs. Movers specialize in heavy lifting and the safe and reliable transportation of goods, which relieves you of the physical strain of moving heavier items.
  If you have a smaller quantity of items needing to be moved, or if you don’t want to hire movers, enlist the help of friends and relatives to share the responsibility of transporting items. In either case, make sure whoever is transporting your possessions knows the destination, including the address and estimated time of arrival.
