Toronto Police Warn About Moving Company Fraud - Digital Journal News

 +

Toronto - Before you sign on the dotted line with a moving company in Toronto, check with the Better Business Bureau and the Consumer Protection Branch to make sure they are legit, police caution.
Constable Tony Vella of Toronto Police Services is warning residents that some moving companies in the area are holding customer's property for ransom unless they pay more than they were quoted at the start of the job. According to a press release, these companies are quoting a low cost for hauling your household contents before your moving day. The company then gets the client to sign a contract on moving day. That contract is generally not read by the harried client who is asked for an up front deposit before any work is done. Halfway through the job the price gets upped. If the client refuses to pay, the company will threaten to move furniture to storage or just unload the haul on the street until the customer comes up with the money. These companies are advertising in local papers, free newspapers and on the Internet. Vella suggests before going with a moving company to contact the Better Business Bureau and the Consumer Protection Branch to see if your movers have had prior complaints. Word-of-mouth is a good thing when it comes to picking a moving company; if your friends and family don't know a good mover ask the company for references and call them. Limit the amount of deposit you provide to a moving company. If an ad seems to be to good to be true it is likely that it is. Ask for a contract before your move and read it through before you sign it. If you disagree with something on the contract ask about it and don't sign until you are in agreement. Police want consumers to remember they are in charge, and they have the right of refusal to the services of any moving company.
