CHICAGO (AP) — Canadian National Railway Co. said Wednesday it will pay $165 million to move its Chicago-area locomotive repair shop to an expanded facility in Gary, Ind.
The railroad said it got tax-increment financing from Gary and grants and tax credits from the state of Indiana for creating jobs.
The work at the Kirk Yard facility will take four years, the company said. The facility will be able to handle 2,500 railcars per day, up from the current 1,500. CN said it will bring 250 jobs to Gary.
The current shop is in Homewood, Ill., south of Chicago.
CN got the 350-acre Gary yard when it bought the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway in 2009.
