IMPROVEMENTS AT WEE WALERS PARK IN NORTH WALES MOVING FORWARD - MONTGOMERY MEDIA NEWS

A plan to improve Wee Walers Park is moving forward. Last month, at its public meeting, North Wales Borough Council voted to approve the advertisement for the planned upgrades at the park on Shearer Street.

Only Councilman Dan O’Connell voted against the measure.

The enhanced park for small children will feature new equipment and landscaping, according to Borough Manager Nate Dysard. He said he hopes to advertise the bid later this month with intent to complete the upgrades by October.

The new design calls for a circular walking path along Shearer Street and the consolidation of equipment near the path, according to a recent presentation by representatives of Gilmore & Associates Inc., the borough’s engineering firm.

Block climbers, a curved balance beam, bobble riders, a springer bouncer and saddle spinner will be strategically located between the walkway and newly purchased playground equipment, according to the plans.

The play area will be surrounded by wood fiber mulch approximately 12 inches deep, according to Chris Green, a landscape architect from Gilmore.

He said the plan also calls for replacing the swing set between the alley at the back of the property and the playground equipment, as well as installing a bench near Shearer Street.

He said borough officials expect to spend $80,000 on new equipment and installation. The municipality would meet its 20 percent match requirement by paying for engineering and design costs.

A Green Fields/Green Towns Program grant — approved three years ago by the Montgomery County Commissioners — worth $97,208 will fund the work, according to Dysard.

Last year, council approved the purchase of new playground equipment — for $17,000 — with some of the grant money, according to Bill Van Sant, borough council’s former president.
