King of Prussia Mall today announced plans to move ahead with the demolition of the former Wanamaker’s department store in The Plaza, paving the way for the redevelopment of retail space adjacent to it. Set to debut in time for Holiday 2012, the two-story, 122,790 square foot redeveloped space will be home to ten new retailers.
This will mark the ninth major renovation or expansion since the mall was originally built in 1961. The last major change took place in 2001 when the former Strawbridge and Clothier department store was redeveloped into The Pavilion.
Demolition and construction work has begun and will continue throughout the fall of 2012. In addition to the enhanced retail corridor, King of Prussia will debut a new grand entrance facing Mall Boulevard, along with improved parking and easier accessibility for customers. During the redevelopment phase, a temporary mall entrance will be constructed between JCPenney and Rite Aid.
“We’ve had a strong leasing year and want to continue to offer the kind of space that popular retailers and restaurants desire,” said General Manager Bob Hart. “Redeveloping this corridor enables us to attract highly sought-after retailers looking for larger spaces in prime markets.”
The project design work is under the direction of Philadelphia-based firm, McGillen Architecture, Inc. McGillen includes among its retail work: Cambridge Crossing, Mount Laurel, New Jersey; Glades Plaza Retail Center, Boca Raton, Florida; Moorestown Commons, Moorestown, New Jersey; and Dash Point Village, Federal Way, Washington. Dale Corporation and John C. Kohler Co. formed a joint venture and will serve as the construction management team.
News of the redevelopment follows the June completion of a remodeled Plaza Food Court, under construction since January. The newly designed space features higher ceilings with special lighting; traditional seating, as well as enclosed areas with bench and bar style seating; a family-style dining table; and marble countertops, tables and flooring from food court sponsor, Colonial Marble and Granite. A two-sided gas fireplace and big screen TV add the finishing touches. Seating capacity in the new space has increased to over 600 seats.
Prior to June 2011, King of Prussia added four new retailers to the ever expanding retail roster: Lululemon, True Religion, Mammoth and 77 Kids. In July, after months of construction, industry attention and consumer anticipation, a new Express concept store (one of only two prototypes in the country) opened to national acclaim. And August will mark the grand opening of Old Navy in The Pavilion. Fall 2011 brings the openings of Vera Bradley, L.L. Bean, Swim ‘N Sport, Ermenegildo Zegna and Wolford. The 2011 new store openings and re-openings will result in the addition of over 300 jobs.
“King of Prussia’s management team is committed to making the customer visit exceptional by providing not only a diversity of retail offerings but the brands and experiences people want,” said Director of Marketing, Kathy Smith. “It is this commitment and the continuing reinvestment in the center and in our community over the past 40 years by King of Prussia’s owners that enable us to remain a premier shopping destination.”
