CEBU, Philippines - Any plan to transfer the Mactan Cebu International Airport to Cordova town may be possible in 10 year’s time or so, says Cebu City South District Rep. Tomas Osmeña.
Osmeña said that the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority and the Municipality of Cordova should study the feasibility because just the thought of it in a nutshell already projects several benefits like solving the traffic problem in Lapu-Lapu City and Mandaue City while providing more opportunities for the airport’s expansion plans.
He said considering some issues restrain MCIAA from expanding the airport where it is now, things would be easy to do in Cordova town.
“Cordova has a shallow area of about 2,900 hectares that is easy to reclaim. The existing runway can be expanded from the Lapu-Lapu North Reclamation Area to the Cordova reclamation, which would be the biggest boulevard in Visayas and Mindanao,” Osmeña said.
To shorten the time in getting to the new airport, Osmeña said traffic may be eased by constructing a backbone highway in the middle of Mactan.
The highway will separate the east area to the west and will lessen the traffic flow in Lapu-Lapu.
A third tunnel from Pier 1 to Shell Island may also ease the traffic when going to Mandaue from Cebu City and going to the mainland from Mactan.
Osmeña said that the development will also provide opportunities for commercial expansion in Mactan Island.
