WHAT TO PACK IN A KID'S ESSENTIAL BOX

When moving with kids, it's important to pack an essentials' box just for them. This is in addition to the family essentials' box that will include everything your family needs for the first few days in your new home. For kids, each child should have their own box. This will not only help children feel included in the move, it'll also help them adapt to their new home.

What to Pack in a Child's Essentials' Box

First, before we begin, it's important that children be involved in selecting and packing their essentials' box. This depends, of course, on the age of the child and whether they're able to choose and pack their own things.
To begin, explain to your child what should be included in the box. This will depend on what kind of move you're making. If you're move includes a long distance trip by car or plane, then your child's essentials box should include items to keep your child entertained and happy during the trip. Other items to include are things your child will want for their first few nights in the new home, things like favorite stuffed toys, books, nightlight, photos and anything they think will help them settle into their new home.
Things you might want to pack:
  • Toothbrush
  • Towel and facecloth
  • Favorite stuffed animal
  • Books
  • Travel games
  • Clothes for two days
  • Pajamas
  • Nightlight
  • Diary/Journal
  • Address book
  • Photos
  • Crayons, pencils, pens
  • Drawing paper
  • Craft items
  • Schoolwork (if moving during the school year)
