ON MEDIA: CHANNEL 58 ADDING NOON NEWS, MOVING TO HD NEWS

Published July 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
Channel 58 has unveiled a new news set as part of its transition to HD.
Channel 58 is going through some major changes, as it makes the technical upgrade to HD newscasts.
It began with the unveiling of a new set for its newscasts, a necessary step as Milwaukee's affiliate moves toward the state-of-the-art high-definition news programming. HD robotic cameras are in place, but general manager Jim Hall says, in laymen's terms, the hard drive of the station has to be upgraded for HD broadcasting.
"I'd like to have it happen now," Hall tells me, but he expects HD to launch in eight to 12 weeks. "It'll happen when we're ready. This is a marathon, not a sprint."

He's right, Channels 4, 6 and – most recently – 12 have already made the upgrade. While it's not a race, adopting the latest technology is necessary for Channel 58 to maintain what Hall calls "production and technical parity with the competition."
In addition to the HD transition, Channel 58 is adding a noon newscast in September. The exact date hasn't been announced, but he confirms that the morning team of anchors Tom Durian and Jennifer Tomazic, and forecaster Lance Hill will staff the new half-hour of news.
It will take advantage of the lead-in available from CBS' "Young and the Restless" at 11 a.m., one of the dwindling number of remaining network soap operas. The noon hour now features the syndicated "Insider," which will move to another time slot, or sister channel WMLW-TV.
Speaking of WMLW: Hall was just as excited to talk about the September launch of syndicated reruns of "The Big Bang Theory" in the 6 p.m. hour in September on WMLW.
Hall says he thinks the comedy will bring a large audience to the station, taking viewers from cable and some from his local broadcast competitors.
"We expect it to make a big bang," he said, swearing he had just come up with that line.
WMLW is available over the air as Channel 58.2 or 41; and is Channel 7 and digital 982 on Time Warner Cable, 7, 8 or 21 on Charter; Channel 5 on AT&T U-Verse; and Channel 41 on DirecTV and Dish Network.
A new program director at WBWI-FM: West Bend's WBWI-FM (92.5) has named radio veteran Ken Kohls as its new program director, replacing Fuzz Martin, who has left the business.
You may have heard Kohls on the air at WMIL-FM (106.1), and he's worked around the country in a 28-year radio career, including a stint as program director at KKRQ-FM in Cedar Rapids/Iowa City.
The country music station continues to look for a morning drive-time host, with AJ Randall – a familiar voice to listeners of the old Matthew Blades show on the station formerly known as WKIT – filling in until a permanent host is found.
Milwaukee Film venue expansion: The 2011 Milwaukee Film Festival, which runs Sept. 22-Oct. 2, has announced that the Landmark Downer Theatre and the Marcus Ridge Cinema in New Berlin will screen films for the entire festival, joining the existing venues – the Landmark Oriental Theatre and Marcus North Shore Cinema in Mequon. Three of the four venues will have two screens showing festival films this year. The Downer will have one screen devoted to the event's screenings.
On TV: MTV is marking the death of Amy Winehouse by airing a 2007 Winehouse concert today at 5:30 p.m.
  • ABC says it's enforcing a new policy not to pay subjects of news stories, according to The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz. In the past, it's paid for the use of video or photographs, a way round the general rule of not paying for interviews.
  • Kaley Cuoco of CBS' "Big Bang" theory will host the Aug. 7 "Teen Choice Awards" on Fox.
  • John Goodman is joining NBC's "Community" as a vice dean at Greenfield Community College.
  • TNT has ordered a second 10-episode season of "Franklin & Bash."

CLOUD IS MOVING FROM BOARDROOM CONVERSATIONS TO REALITY -

The market has been abuzz with news about the potential of cloud computing in the past few years, but really, it is embracing an evolution of sorts for enterprise businesses, one where the cloud is moving from boardroom conversations to reality. We envisage the journey to the cloud as a phased one.
In their journey to the cloud—more of an evolutionary process and not triggered by any particular development or revolution—many organizations have consistently explored opportunities to strengthen their existing technology infrastructure to ensure they become a better internal service provider for various lines of business and organisational departments. Clearly, the objective has been to provide greater agility and responsiveness to business needs, higher quality of service in terms of latency & availability, and lower costs and higher utilization.
Organisations have realised that their datacentres still have dedicated silos, where each application runs on its own middleware, database, servers and storage. Each...

MORE JOB SEEKERS ARE MOVING FOR NEW POSITIONS - MARKET WATCH NEWS

More unemployed managers and executives are deciding to pack their bags and move for a new position, according to a report released this week by Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
During the first half of the year, about 9.4% of job seekers relocated for a job, up from 7.6% within the same window of time in 2010, according to the outplacement consultancy firm. That’s from a survey of about 3,000 job seekers; many of the respondents are managers and executives.
“The 9.4% relocation rate in the first half of 2011 is still low by historical standards, but the increase does indicate that job seekers are finally beginning to loosen the stakes that have kept them tethered to a specific region,” said John A. Challenger, chief executive of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, in a news release.
“Since there has been little improvement in the housing market in 2011, one might conclude that the increased relocation in the first half of the year is due to the fact that prolonged unemployment is compelling more job seekers to relocate, despite the challenges of selling a home in this market,” Challenger said.
“At some point, the job seeker may simply conclude that it is worth taking a loss on a home sale to get back on the payroll,” he said. It’s also possible that employers are becoming more willing to help employees relocate.
Before the recession it was more common for people move for a job, according to the report. About 16.1% of people who found jobs each quarter between the first quarter of 2005 and the third quarter of 2007 relocated for the position. But at that time, selling a house wasn’t nearly as difficult as it is in today’s climate.
Read more real-estate news in this week’s pages, including why the foreclosure rate is on the rise in Seattle and a Realty Q&A about one reader’s struggle with his lender.
Employment markets in some parts of the country are recovering faster than others, and in a job search, “when you cast a wider net, you are more likely to catch more fish,” Challenger said.
But these days, if you’re a homeowner, casting a wider net often means you also have to be OK with taking a loss on the sale of your home.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected again Sunday and Monday, with the main threat continuing to be flash flooding, they said.
Thunderstorm chances will decrease Tuesday and Wednesday as drier air moves in, they said.
Scattered rain fell throughout the valley on Friday, including a trace of rain that was recorded at McCarran International Airport.
At 5:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran was 88 degrees. The normal low for today’s date is 79 degrees. The record low was 64 degrees, set in 1941.

The Simple Guide to Moving

Moving is high up on the life stress list which includes things like the loss of a loved one or divorce.  People move for a variety of reasons sometimes the move is by choice but often not, such as new job position, downsizing, or retirement.  Even the reason for the move can be very stressful events.  These are difficult situations and time consuming so here are some simple ways to help ease the stress-provoking process.
  1. Before you actually move, look around your house and see what you would like to take with you.  Just set aside things that you use and love and see what left over, and then go through the uncluttering process.  Don’t move anything you don’t love.  Get rid of old paperwork you don’t need.  Get rid of all the clothes you don’t wear too.  Take only the stuff you absolutely love and use regularly.  Use up frozen food before you leave.  You are going to be surprised at how much stuff you can actually do without.
  2. The average household can be packed up in less than a week.  If you hire movers to do the packing, it can usually be done in one day.  Get an estimate from the movers as to how long they will take.  Set aside one room in the house where packed boxes can be kept out of the way while you are packing up.
  3. Start with collectibles, then the books, linens, clothes, and personal items.  Pack the kitchen last on the morning of the move.
  4. Keep some clothes you will need for a couple of days and an overnight kit with you.
  5. Use large wardrobe boxes for the remainder of your clothes and load them directly from the closet from your old place into the closets in the new place.
  6. When packing books, start with the top shelf of a bookcase and move from left to right all the way down to the bottom shelf. Take a stack from the shelf and put them right into the box in the same order.  Label the boxes from bookcase and by number.  When unpacking, start with box number one and stack the books on the shelves exactly as you packed them in the same order.
  7. Gather basic tools such as hammer, screw driver (flat heat and Phillips), leveling device, pliers (long-nose, slip-joint), tape measure, utility knife, receptacle tester, strong double-sided adhesive tape.  Having these tolls at hand will avoid the hassle of sorting through boxes and waiting around to put things back together.
  8. Set aside cleaning supplies.  You may need to clean before you unpack.  Even with the new place you are moving into is cleaned and ready to live in, have cleaning supplies such as disinfectants, detergent, dishwashing liquid, rubber gloves for cleaning the bathroom, garbage bags, and plenty off rags and paper towels for cleaning.
  9. Pack simple food and drink such as bread, crackers, peanut butter, and bottled water and basic kitchen utensils such as a skillet, a coffee pot, spatula, sharp knife, silverware, dish towels, paper plates, napkins, and glasses.  This should be just enough to help making things more comfortable while you are working on getting the new place put together.
Stay active and keep up with your usual exercise routines and normal meal schedules during relocation period.  This will put some order as well as providing needed relaxation to your temporary chaotic life.

Moving Before School Starts?

The summer months aren’t just filled with vacations, picnics and trips to the amusement park, but there’s also a traffic jam of families moving to new homes.  The summer is the best time to relocate children.  Of course there are moments when a child may be uprooted during the school year, but this should only be done when it’s absolutely necessary.  Allowing a child the opportunity to adapt to his or her new community, make friends in the neighborhood and then enter a new school is a much smoother transition.

So if you’re one of the thousands of families moving this summer I’d like to offer a few tips.  If you’re moving locally, long distance or even internationally I recommend you hire a reputable moving company to facilitate your relocation.  Now don’t just hire any mover, but shop for a relocation expert who’s able to be flexible.  There are so many variables when it comes to moving to a new home, especially in another state.  A flexible mover will not abandon your move if your move-in date shifts due to closing postponement or any other mishap.  This all too important characteristic is often overlooked by many consumers and thus becomes the source of many moving nightmares across the U.S.   I always recommend a Plan B when it comes to moving out of your old home and into the new one.  It would be wise to check local hotels in the area or extended stay properties.  You don’t have to reserve a room, but jot down their information and check their availability for that week.  This way you’re not looking frantically at the last minute trying to locate a place for you and your family.

Although things sometimes go wrong, there are also a number of times things go according to plan.  Therefore you also need a reliable mover.  A reliable mover is one who honors their commitment to an on time arrival and delivery of your household goods.  This is crucial for families relocating in a tight window before school starts.  Please note if you schedule a move date in the afternoon your movers could be late or early.  An afternoon move normally takes place after the first or second move of the day.  Your moving company will most likely give you a window of time they will arrive between.  As with any service professional they can’t guarantee a start time because it solely depends on the previous job(s).  I always recommend an early morning move.In preparation for moving day please make certain you properly tag your items.  If your moving company is doing the packing confirm their packing system to ensure you’re comfortable.  There’s nothing worse than not being able to find your things once you arrive at your new home.  While this may be a tedious process, it will pay off when you’re quickly trying to get settled in your home before school.  I also recommend you hold onto your child’s school records, immunizations, and other vital records needed for school registration.  This way, there’s no opportunity for things to be left behind, misplaced or out of your site at any time.  While the weeks are dwindling by quick, there’s still time for you to relocate and get settled in your new community before school starts, but hurry the first day of school is just around the corner.

Moving Company Estimates

Moving company estimates are not that cut and dried as there are many factors to consider. For example, if you have a piano or pool table, this will require special care. You can opt to have the moving company pack your household which of course would cost more than if you do the packing yourself. And, of course, if you will need to store your household in between moves there is a cost associated with that as well.
Whatever your moving needs are get free moving company estimates from monstermoving. You can get an instant price quote for any type of move including Full-Service, Self-Service, Auto, Office, Specialty, and International Movers!
Moving company estimates differ for local and long distance moves. If you are moving long distance, the charge is typically calculated by the weight of the items moved and the distance you are moving. As you can see, giving an estimate just by looking at your items can be tricky but most movers are professionals with years of experience and can get you in the general ball park.
In order to get more accurate moving company estimates, make sure you tell the mover about everything you are having moved so he can calculate accurately. If you have items that require special care or need special services (like packing) then let them know up front. It is probably a good idea to get estimates from several movers.
Make sure you know what kind of moving company estimates you are getting. A Non Bindingestimate is basically just a best guess. It may actually end up costing more or less depending on the final weight of your household. A Binding estimate is binding and you will be expected to pay that amount whether your goods weigh more or less. You can also get a Not to Exceed or Guaranteed Price estimate which guarentees that you will pay the binding price or a lower if your items weight less than estimated - you will never pay more than the binding price. When you are comparing estimates from different movers, it is best to compare the same type of estimate.
When getting your moving company estimates, make sure you discuss how the mover will be paid. Many movers do not take personal checks so you best be aware of the type of payment you will have to hand over and when this payment is expected - no one wants to have to run out to the bank to get cash for the movers in the middle of moving day!

Moving and Mobility in America During the Economic Crisis

A recent article published on the internet discussed the issue of mobility and moving during the present economic crisis in America. In other words, less people are moving today than at any time during the past century. As Americans are more inclined to relocate than the populations of most countries in the world, this has become a unique and possibly disturbing trend. This is important to homeowners, job seekers and industry alike.
There are many reasons for this. Among them, people are finding it difficult to sell their homes, they can not find jobs in the area where they were planning to move or they are not interested in relocating for work when it affects a partner’s stable job or position in their present area.
Many have also found that they just can not afford to move, even though moving will offer them new opportunities. This has helped to maintain high levels unemployment in many parts of the country with no change seen in the foreseeable future.
This big drop in moving and relocation has caused many to ask these two questions. Who is moving and why are they relocating?
Economists have found that there are states that will actually be losing population through relocation to other areas and the reasons are varied. Some of the states that are expected to see major decreases in their populations the near future are New York, Illinois, Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, North Dakota and Mississippi.
For example New York State has been rapidly losing large segments of its population over the past number of years. Since in New York State, housing prices have not been affected badly as in other regions of the country or states and the housing market in New York has remained stable, it is easier for a homeowner to sell their home and move to anther location. In areas of the state such as New York City many who rent homes and apartments have found themselves out of work and can no longer afford the high cost of living in the New York Metropolitan area. This is forcing a big migration from the city to more affordable locations.
In Illinois, the economy, loss of jobs in manufacturing and industry are causing people to move. High taxes have also become an issue. This is true in other Midwestern states such as Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas and North Dakota.
States such as Michigan, especially its big cities have been steadily losing residents because of a severe lack of jobs and opportunity.
Two other states, Louisiana and Mississippi have been affected by unfortunate circumstances. Many were forced from the area because of Hurricane Katrina and never returned. Another large part of the population will be leaving because of other natural and economic circumstances such as the big oil spill in the area which has affected local businesses.
However, there are still many other reasons for relocating, even in these difficult economic times. An aging population is looking to move to better locations, with better weather and conditions that will also offer a more affordable way of life. There are also many young people that are moving to states where they can start a carrier or there are large corporations offering well paid jobs.
States including Texas, Arizona, North Carolina and Florida are expected to actually show rapid population growth. These are states that offer good weather, affordable living and good health care. They also offer jobs in high tech and service oriented industries that are attractive to younger segments of the population.
Another big surprise is in the many “Rust Belt” states and cities. These locations that had reached rock bottom have shown a willingness to attract new residents and new businesses, especially high tech industries. They have made themselves attractive for new businesses and for people to relocate by creating the right atmosphere or economic conditions.
As we see, many less people are moving during these economically trying times in America. There is no one reason for this. Then, when they do relocate it is from recognized states and cities. They move to specific locations and for very specific reasons. This has a positive and negative snowball effect on many parts of the country and surely on the economy.

24 DEAD, 9 MISSING IN SLOW-MOVING PHILIPPINE STORM - YAHOO NEWS

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Heavy rains and floods battered the northeastern Philippines for a third day Wednesday as the death toll from a slow-moving storm rose to at least 24 with nine others missing.
Waist-deep floodwaters swamped the houses of about half a million people, nearly half of the population of eastern Albay province, after Tropical Storm Nock-ten set off pounding rains since Monday and sent residents to seek shelter in churches and village halls, said Gov. Joey Salceda.
Regional civil defense chief Rafaelito Alejandro said floodwaters in Albay started to subside by noon Wednesday after the storm made landfall in Aurora, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) to the north. It packed maximum winds of 59 miles (95 kilometers) per hour and gusts of up to 75 mph (120 kph).
Alejandro said at least 20 people died in the Bicol region, which includes Albay. Eight of those were buried in landslides in Albay's Polangui township and in nearby Camarines Norte province.
Other fatalities included a mother who was bitten by a poisonous snake that was swept into her home by a flashflood near the Albay provincial capital of Legazpi.
National civil defense administrator Benito Ramos said two others drowned in Cavite province just south of Manila and one each in the central provinces of Marinduque and Iloilo.
Most of the missing are poor fishermen who ventured out to sea despite the stormy weather, he said.
The storm weakened slightly after hitting land, said forecaster Sonny Pajarilla. It is expected to blow out of the country to the South China Sea by Thursday after cutting through the heart of Luzon Island.
Authorities cut off electricity to most of the region to prevent electrocutions, Ramos said.
One of the victims during the power outage was Salceda's mother, who fell on her head after slipping in the dark bathroom, Alejandro said, adding that she wasn't counted as a storm fatality.
Power was restored in Legazpi and most of the other provincial urban centers later Wednesday. Workers removed toppled trees, rocks and other debris blocking roads and firefighters hosed away mud from the streets.
Many domestic flights were canceled and about 1,600 ferry passengers stranded.

MOVING DAY FOR COLUMBIA COUNTY FAMILY ENDS UP IN FLAMES - NEWS CHANNEL

A Columbia County family is homeless Tuesday after a kitchen fire damaged their home, on moving day.
The fire broke out around 9:30 Monday night on the 200 block of Stonington Drive. That’s in the Heritage Hill subdivision off Columbia Road in Martinez.
Investigators believe the fire was accidental.
Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire. One of the family members was inside the home when the fire broke out.

Investigators think the boxes inside the home made the fire spread quicker, but say, while the structure is intact, the smoke and fire damage no longer makes the home livable.
For most new homeowners, moving day means unpacking boxes and starting a new chapter.
"Well, let's just say we didn't expect this,” said Neil Osbon.
But, for the Osbon family, moving day ended with a call to 911.
Their decade long American dream went up in flames, but they say the dream is delayed, not destroyed.
"We're going to be in here. This is just a delay. We may take a little longer,” said Osbon.
Neil’s brother Keith came down to help the family from Atlanta.
"They're surprisingly upbeat because Neil and Georgette have talked about this for years, moving into a home of their own,” said Keith Osbon.
"We picked up hardwood flooring; we picked up a brand new fridge.
It is just a house. I am very thankful who was in the house got out safely.
We have each other and that really what matters,” said Neil Osbon.
And instead of meeting and greeting neighbors on their second day, the Osbon family called their insurance company and tried to salvage what they could.
"Most everything is gone. There are some clothes and shoes. The wedding photos were near the fire,” said Neil Osbon.
“The stuff is unimportant. That can be replaced,” said Neil Osbon.
The family says their faith keeps them strong. They've already received donations from church members and some neighbors at heritage hill have opened their doors.
"They will live here,” said Keith Osbon.
"A lot of stuff from the past is history but that gives us a chance to look forward. We can make some new memories here,” said Neil Osbon.
If you’d like to help the Osbon family, you can donate at the Good News Church on Warren Road

DOMINION MOVING AHEAD ON ELECTRIC VEHICLE PROGRAM - YAHOO NEWS

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Dominion Virginia Power is moving forward with a pricing program for residential customers who own or lease plug-in electric vehicles.
The Richmond-based energy provider says the program would offer reduced rates for overnight charging and higher rates during peak times.
For example, customers could pay as little as 41 cents to charge an electric vehicle overnight for a 40-mile commute.
Dominion anticipates that by 2020 more than 86,000 electric vehicles will be on the road in its service area. It has about 2.4 million customers in Virginia.
The pricing program could apply only to charging the car, or for all of a customer's electric use.
Virginia regulators approved the program on July 11 and interested customers can sign up beginning Oct. 3.
The pilot program will end in November 2014.

GOVERNMENT CRACKS DOWN ON MOVING SCAMS - US NEWS

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 27 (UPI) -- U.S. and state authorities are cracking down on "rogue" moving outfits that use online scams to take advantage of people, industry officials say.
Online scam artists are posing as licensed movers and ripping off consumers by increasing prices, giving false estimates and taking consumers' possessions hostage, USA Today reported Wednesday.
Unlicensed moving companies are more likely to overcharge customers, said Linda Bauer Darr, president and chief executive officer of the American Moving and Storage Association in Alexandria, Va.
"Our mission is to get these rogues off the road; that is the single most important thing we can do right now. The rogues in the industry are killing our business and killing consumers' faith in professional movers," says Darr.
The Better Business Bureau logged more than 8,900 complaints against both licensed and unlicensed moving companies in 2010, which was a 5 percent increase from 2009, a BBB spokeswoman said.
In 2010, the BBB began tracking complaints against online moving brokers, who act as go-betweens, connecting consumers and moving companies, receiving 285 against these brokers, and 111 so far in 2011.
In response to the widespread scamming, many states have conducted undercover investigations this year. Three California-based companies are facing fines of at least $25,000, 25 companies in New Jersey have been charged with operating without a license, and over 300 citations have been given to Illinois-based companies. Maryland passed a law that restricts movers from charging more than 25 percent above an original estimate.
