Leaving home to study is a big step and can be a very stressful phase of your life, but there are a number of things that you can do to ease some of the stress.
t is difficult for most people to make the transition between living at home and living away and having looking after yourself for the first time. Add to this the pressures of studying at an unfamiliar institution, and you have lots of potential stress. Having a clear and concise check-list of things to do and remember can help ease you through this major lifestyle adjustment.
The essentials for moving students
- Accommodation should be number one on your check-list. You should aim to find and confirm your accommodation at least a month prior to the date when you need to move. If you move into your accommodation a week or two before your course starts, you will have time to become comfortable before you begin life as a tertiary student.
- Organising your belongings is also crucial. You may wish to make a list of important items that you must remember to take with you initially and check this list just before you leave. Depending on how far you are moving away, you may be able to pick up more items during return visits, so forgetting something minor may not be as inconvenient. You will not need everything you own in your new place; carefully decide what you should and should not take, especially if the space you are moving into is limited. It is necessary to check your planned accommodation to see what is already provided and what is needed. If your room is unfurnished, you will need a bed and desk (at least). Other things to check for include kitchenware, electrical appliances, linen and anything else you might need during your time there.
Extra things to look into for moving students
- There are a few things you should do before moving that may not be so obvious. Getting your own card (separate from your family’s) for the government’s healthcare scheme is useful. You should also look into government benefits for students, and you may be entitled to a one-off payment for moving away from home to study. You may also need to open a new bank account and arrange rental payments. You should also ensure you advise your bank and any other businesses that may send you mail of your new address.
- Before moving, you should briefly research the area you are moving to; develop a basic knowledge of where the nearest important buildings are, such as hospitals, post offices and shops, and check that you will have internet access in your new place.
