Moving away from home is scary!

As I planned to move from my home to student accommodation in Southampton I was so excited and however sad it sounds stupidly excited to purchase all those grown up items I’d taken for granted at home: plates, cutlery, glasses, towels and even food that I’d have to cook myself, can you believe it!
But on arriving at halls on that fateful October day I was terrified, begging to go home! I left my flat as soon as my things were dropped off, barely saying a word to any of my new flatmates, and spent a few precious final hours with my parents before they headed ‘home’.
When I arrived back at the flat, I had no idea what to do as I sat on my own, talking to new people had never been my strong point and I’d normally hid behind more chatty, outgoing friends. Yet I knew that tomake something of my time here I’d have to throw caution to the wind and I’m so glad I did!
Soon after that moment of fear, I began to bond with all my flatmates. We had the best Fresher’s Week, spending most of our time together. When it was time to start lectures I made friends with lots of people on my course and really began to enjoy the university experience. Now in my second year I continue to make an effort with new people and overcome my shyness, my friends can’t believe I used to suffer from it badly! I will always be happy I left my comfort zone just over two years ago, and have been working hard not to retreat back to it too often now!
