The Philippines is moving on to the next round of the qualifiers of the most prestigious football tournament in the world – the World Cup. And the Philippine Men’s Football National Team did it in rousing style by thrashing Sri Lanka 4-0 before a roaring capacity Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. Some 16,000 people (including the paying patrons, the media, the security detail and organizing committee were inside the refurbished stadium) saw the Azkals buck a hard tackling Brave Reds team and the rain to come away with a decisive victory.
But at first, there was some uncertainty on the match fitness of some Philippine players.
After suffering from a hamstring injury in their first match, questions started to roll over the whole country whether Forward Phil Younghusband will be able to play in their next game or not.
Luckily, his doctor gave him a go signal to play today in front of an audience of 12,870 at the 77-year-old Rizal Memorial Football Stadium for the second leg of the FIFA Qualifying match.
The Filipino-British Younghusband scored two goals, one coming in the 43rd minute and another via a penalty kick in the 57th to lead the Azkals and outclass the National Team of Sri Lanka.
The Nationals made history as they advance to the second round for the first time wherein they will face a tougher team of Kuwait on July 23, 2011.
Veteran Chieffy Caligdong made the opening goal in the 19th minute despite a heavy downpour.
