HUNDREDS OF ELEMENTARY STUDENTS GET MOVING TO FIGHT OBESITY - WKTB NEWS

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Hundreds of elementary students in New Hartford got moving in an effort to fight childhood obesity on Monday.

It's part of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign. Some 500 students gathered in front of the E.R. Hughes School to take part in an outdoor exercise class. The lesson came complete with upbeat music and an instructor to show the kids the right moves.

Second grade teacher Bonnie Montana came up with the idea. Montana is retiring at the end of the year and said she "wanted to leave a legacy, of sorts."

She says that in her classroom, her students exercise every day, something she hopes will extend into the summer months.

"Children nowadays, they play video games, they sit in front of the TV, they sit in front of the computer, not outside moving like I was when Ii was a child. So hopefully, a class like this can get them, maybe be more physically active this summer and realize you can have fun music with it, do dance do exercise. Something like that."

Montana didn't have to look far to find an instructor - Susie Hamilton, a history teacher at the high school is also a fitness instructor.
