Sheriff’s deputies believe a camper who was reported missing over the Fourth of July weekend may have fallen into a fast-moving creek and been swept away.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department said they began searching for 37-year-old Michael Antonelli when he failed to return from a camping trip he went on with his dog.
Antonelli’s girlfriend told investigators that he went camping near Boulder Lake but didn’t return on Monday like he said he would.
On Tuesday, deputies found his campsite near a 20-foot drop into Elk Creek.
“Deputies examined the campsite and found evidence to suggest Antonelli got too close to the edge of the site and the ground gave way underneath him,” the sheriff’s department said. “It appears he probably fell in the creek and died.”
Deputies found no sign of Antonelli’s body or his 5-year-old catahoula leopard hound named Katie.
Antonelli is described as a white male, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
The sheriff's office said they plan on sending a helicopter to the area to conduct an areal search.
